Harry potter magical words8/24/2023 These are just a few examples of excellent Harry Potter word origins. Rowling published her first book in the Harry Potter seriesHarry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in 1997fans were introduced to an expansive new world that they have been lost in ever since. ("Because Albus Dumbledore is very fond of music, I always imagined him as sort of humming to himself a lot," Rowling once explained.) And to name the wizarding world's most obnoxious thief, Rowling used the word Mundungus, which means "waste animal product organic matter unfit for consumption" or "poor-quality tobacco with a foul, rancid, or putrid smell." According to Wordnik, dumbledore is an 18th century English word for a bumblebee. The author also repurposed regular words to suit her needs to rather delightful ends. The summoning charm Accio is Latin for "I summon." And Expecto Patronum, which wizards use to create an animal that drives away Dementors, translates to "I wait/hope for a patron." Harry's signature spell, Expelliarmus, is used to disarm an opponent, and, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, combines the Latin expellere, "to drive or force out," with arma, which means weapon. Rowling studied Latin at the University of Exeter, and she clearly got a lot of use out of that study time: Most of Harry Potter's spells have their roots in classical Latin. Rowling used to create the world of the Boy Who Lived? And what better way to do it than by examining the origins of some of the wonderful words J.K. Whether you're a wizard, squib, or just plain muggle, you're probably celebrating the Chosen One's birthday today.

Oringinal mario voice actor8/24/2023 Ruben, and Nicholas Glaeser would all play the character - some even in video games - before Martinet ever did. In fact, Larry Moran, Lou Albano, Walker Boone, Ronald B. This was all three years before Martinet would voice the character at all for the first time in the 1992 Super Mario Bros. This was also the first time a movie had ever been created based on a video game, making it quite the special release. In 1981, the hero of Donkey Kong still didn’t have an official name, being recognized by fans as Jump Man since that was his primary tool while fighting DK and trying to rescue Pauline. Martinet only does a few words and sounds like wahoo and yippee in a very cartoony voice. He even voiced Mario in the first-ever movie for the character - Super Mario Brothers: Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. moreover the only people that would even watch a movie for the fact that its main character is voice by their voice actor are the type of people that watches movies to hear a voice actor voicing a character they voice. He went on to be the plumber in three other OVAs including Super Mario Traffic Safety, Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Brothers, and Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi's Adventure Land. This wasn't the only time Furuya voiced Mario either. The prolific voice actor, known for lending her vocals to approximately 150 different characters. Most viewers will recognize Chris Pratt from his role as Andy in Parks and Recreation. Tara Strong is adamant that Chris Pratt should not star in Super Mario Bros. Chris Pratt will be voicing Mario, the true star of the franchise. However, this fire safety video featured Furuya as Mario for the first time. Voice actor Tara Strong weighs in on the controversy surrounding Chris Pratt’s Mario voice, stating that Charles Martinet should play the part.c. Super Mario's Fire Brigade is old and obscure enough that no one currently knows its official release date. Movie is now showing in movie theaters in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world. While the first voice of Mario was arguably Peter Cullen in the Donkey Kong Cartoon from 1982, it is entirely possible that Toru Furuya was the first actor to play the character. Movie credits on IMDB-"Mario's Dad" and "Giuseppe"-and by a snapshot of the credits from the official French dub of the movie that has been shared on social media. These observations are corroborated both by Martinet's Super Mario Bros. Having just watched his two boys become heroes, he's far more positive this time around! On the flip side, Mario's dad also crops up after Mario and Luigi take down Bowser in the final showdown after King Koopa made his way back into the real world. Their father appears several times across the film early on, he appears in an awkward family scene where he tells Mario off for leaving his stable job and dragging his brother off to start a business together. Martinet's other role is more substantial and a little more symbolic, as he also plays Mario and Luigi's father. The fact that this character promptly pulls a classic Mario pose and was playing a Jump Man arcade game (Mario's original name, for those not in the know) all but confirms that this has to be the main man himself. Whilst the pair debate whether the accents are a bit much, a man called Giuseppe who sounds distinctly like Martinet interrupts and trots out some classic Mario catchphrases, saying: "Too much? It's-a perfect! Wahoo!" Mario and Luigi have filmed an advert for their plumbing business which sees them adopting exaggerated Italian accents ( watch the ad here). The first time Charles Martinet appears is mere minutes into the film.

Utc time clock online8/24/2023 Since the 1970s, this time standard has been globally used as the most precise time standard, instead of formerly used GMT standard, which has turned now into a regular time zone. UTC, or Universal Time Coordinated, is the most precise and commonly referred to time standard. Time = omtimestamp(resp.tx_time, tz=timezone. Here, you can learn what time is it in UTC time now and what the most accurate time now is, use our UTC time zone converter designed to easily convert time from current time in UTC to one of over a hundred presently existing time zones, as well as use some useful links at the bottom of the page collected for you by the experts of our team. You can use ntplib: from ntplib import NTPClient Now_ny = now_berlin.astimezone(ZoneInfo('America/New_York'))Īctually using ntp instead of the computer clock Now_berlin = datetime.now(ZoneInfo('Europe/Berlin')) Since python 3.9, the stdlib has the zoneinfo library, you can use this to convert between timezones.įor python < 3.9, you have to use a thirdparty library like dateutil. # convert back to datetime, specifying that the timestamp is in UTC # convert to unix, this will keep the utc timezone The correct solution in python 3 should be: from datetime import datetime, timezone Turns out this question was rather about how to convert to / from unix timestamps and datetimes. Getting correct, timezone aware datetimes and unix timestamps (No I have not done the statistical confidence interval posterior on the accuracy) It is then further feasible to write all the rest of my code such that all logic will assume UTC time. It is a feasible coding practice to write a "get UTC time now" code using all the information within the accepted answer, that is accurate to within a second or two. UPDATE: After accepting the provided answer it has become clear to me for my purposes, trusting my computer clock for a few seconds after updating my computer clock from a trusted source, then asking my computer clock for UTC time within those few seconds is good enough. TLDR I am looking for a reliable UTC api for python, and a way to prevent datetime from ever reading my computer clock again. # that would ask datetime library to attempt to read computer clock: #Trigger exception with new settings, when i accidentally write code #current_utc_datetime = current_utc_datetime_again #Transform back and forth to UTC Epoch time:Ĭurrent_utc_epoch = current_utc_datetime.timestamp()Ĭurrent_utc_datetime_again = (current_utc_epoch) #force datetime libaries to never read my computer clock:ĭatetime.some_settings_function( readcomputerclock = False/'Never' )Ĭurrent_utc_date_and_time_from_online = requests.get(.) #some api get requestĬurrent_utc_datetime = transform( current_utc_date_and_time_from_oneline ) The tools within the datetime.datetime objects are great, however it would be nice be able to flag some setting when importing the datetime library and prevent reading my computer clock entirely, to avoid any accidental clock badness issue.ĮXAMPLE OF CODE I AM LOOKING FOR: import datetime I keep finding myself accidentally being off 5 hours from EST, or off 1 hour from daylight savings when doing calculations. My use case is to do some time series analysis. I am trying to retool my code to entirely live in UTC time. I want to write the code assuming that if it runs from a computer with a bad clock, it still gets the correct time. Using '.utcnow()' or '.now()' both depend upon the accuracy of my computer clock. Does anyone have any tips to get the current UTC time, from online somewhere, and write some decent python code assuming my computer clock is always wrong? current_datetime = () #-> assume always wrongĬurrent_datetime = () #-> assume always wrong

Penny downie8/24/2023 These shifting tones are a virtue in the book but, in the theatre, are disorientating and emotionally misleading.ĭirector Josette Bushell-Mingo has with these surprising elements tried to embrace the novel’s spirit. Moreover, the narrative arc cannot cope with the extreme switching of styles: the maids’ chorus enters as sailors on shore leave from South Pacific one minute and then delivers something akin to an out-take from a Busby Berkley dance number complete with fluttering ostrich feather fans the next. It fails to sustain for the audience a meaningful relationship between Penelope and her maids to suggest her sense of loss and guilt. The result, while full of theatrical invention, commitment and structurally faithful to the original is, though, dramatically unsatisfying. She has, in short, created an allusive collage of Greek theatre in a short story – no doubt why the RSC thought it ripe to pluck from page to stage. The maids appear in the book as if a chorus in Greek tragedy, Penelope’s voice is like a Euripides character with long self-searching monologues and there are elements of burlesque that would not be out of place in an Aristophanic comedy or satyr play that followed the tragedies in Ancient Greece’s drama festivals. Witty and referential, it is a fine companion to Homer and wonderfully theatrical. Their actions, she recalls, stem from her secretly enlisting their help in her stratagems to keep at bay the suitors who are after her hand and her husband’s kingdom. The plot turns on her relationship with her 12 maids and particularly her guilt at their murder by Odysseus when he returns for consorting with his enemies in his absence. In it she assumes Penelope’s perspective, Odysseus’s spouse, left behind when he went off to the Trojan war. The Odyssey has had everything from a Hollywood makeover with Kirk Douglas to a free translation in one day in the life of Leopold Bloom in James Joyce’s Dublin.Ĭanadian author Margaret Atwood’s 2005 novel, The Penelopiad, by comparison, is a slender take on what Aristotle called the comedy of manners. Indeed the blind poet’s oral epics have been a source of inspiration ever since they were written down. Aeschylus said his tragedies were simply crumbs from Homer’s table.

Drizzle it in slowly, atablespoon of water at a time. Pour the lemon juice or vinegar over the dough and add the ice-cold water. If the butter is melting at any point, place the bowl in the refrigerator. A few very small cubes are fine but the rest can be left in fairly large chunks. Use a pastry cutter to roughly cut the butter into the flour, but not too small. Add the cold cubes of butter to the flour. To a large bowl add the flour, sugar, and salt and mix them together. You'll also need an egg for the egg wash to brush the pastries before baking.īegin by chopping the butter into 1inch cubes and placing them in the freezer for 5 minutes to ensure it's nice and cold. Strawberries- A bit of the strawberry filling will be strained into syrup and used in the glaze. If you're wanting to freeze the strawberry cake filling, use arrowroot instead of cornstarch. Cornstarch or arrowroot - To thicken the strawberry filling.Salt - Just a pinch to balance the sweetness.Lemon juice - Lemon juice enhances the strawberries' natural flavor. The amount of sugar can be lessened if your strawberries are very sweet or increased for tart strawberries. Maple syrup, honey, stevia, or brown rice syrup can all be used. Sugar (or another sweetener) - Granulated sugar is used in this recipe but the sweetness can come from other sources too.Strawberries - Roughly chopped strawberries or sliced strawberries if they're big but they can be left as a whole strawberry if they're small. This vinegar helps keep the dough pliable when rolling without needing to rest in between folds. Substitute it for lemon juice if you have no vinegar.

Gram negative bacteria antibiotics8/23/2023 Findings suggest that fabimycin could eventually be used to treat Gram-negative infections in humans.īacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria mutate over time and no longer respond to antibiotics, making infections more difficult to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. Scientists have described infections due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria as a threat to modern healthcare.īacteria can be categorized as Gram-positive or Gram-negative based on the structure of their cell membranes.Fabimycin also showed efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria in mouse infection models of a challenging urinary tract infection (UTI) and acute pneumonia. One molecule synthesized by the researchers, fabimycin, showed promise in combating more than 200 Gram-negative bacteria and didn’t have a significant impact on the harmless bacteria that are typically present in the human gut microbiome.Researchers modified an existing antibiotic to create a new molecule that may be effective against Gram-negative bacteria that are drug resistant. Both unfinished antibiotic courses and overuse of antibiotics have also led to increased instances of antibiotic resistant bacteria.Share on Pinterest WLADIMIR BULGAR/Getty Images It is important to finish all the antibiotics that are prescribed, so that the immune system doesn’t have to work as hard to fight the infection. Bacteria resistant to the effects of the antibiotic remain, but in small numbers they can be eliminated from the body by the immune system. Penicillin kills most of the bacterial cells, but it does not kill them all. Viruses are unaffected by antibiotics because they do not have peptidoglycan cell walls or ribosomes, and they do not replicate their own DNA.īacteria can become resistant to antibiotics through the process of selection and evolution. Ciprofloxacin, one of the strongest antibiotics, attacks bacterial DNA replication while leaving human cellular DNA unaffected.Īntibiotics are highly specific to a certain bacterial function, and are not helpful for treating non-bacterial illnesses. Tetracycline antibiotics bind to bacterial ribosomes that are responsible for protein production and inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Sulfa antibiotics target a specific enzyme that inhibits bacterial growth. Other antibiotics target different molecules that inhibit bacterial growth while leaving human cells undamaged. Image courtesy of Graevemoore, Wikimedia Commons Human cells do not contain peptidoglycan, so penicillin specifically targets bacterial cells. The cells burst open and are much easier for the immune system to break down, which helps the sick person heal more quickly. Penicillin works best on gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting peptidoglycan production, making the cells leaky and fragile. Gram-negative bacteria have peptidoglycan between membranes. Gram-positive bacteria have a peptidoglycan layer on the outside of the cell wall. Within bacteria, there are two types of bacterial cell walls. Composition of the cell wall in the archaea is more diverse. The cell walls of most fungi are made from chitin. Algae cell walls can be made of cellulose, xylan, silica, carrageenan or a variety of other materials. The cell walls of algae are highly variable. The cell walls of plants, for example, are made from cellulose. The composition of the cell wall differs depending on the type of organism, so penicillin does not affect other organisms. Nearly every bacterium has a peptidoglycan cell wall. Peptidoglycan molecules form strong links that give the bacterial cell strength as well as preventing leakage from the cytoplasm. Penicillin interferes with the production of a molecule called peptidoglycan. When used as an antibiotic treatment, penicillin operates by a very specific mechanism. Penicillin was first used to treat bacterial infections in 1942 and is derived from the fungus Penicillium sp. Modern physicians frequently prescribe antibiotic medications to help people fight infections. One of the first antibiotics discovered was penicillin. |
